Founded in 2000 in Germany initially the Powerkiteboat combined new concepts of propulsion for boats using kites and hydrodynamics technology of small coastal catamarans. The idea of propulsion of a boat by a kite involves complex aerodynamics with polar elements - means sailing with kites is sailing in three dimensions, with dynamic elements of vectors as velocities and forces of the kite. The most convenient way to introduce the forces of a kite directly to the hydrodynamic part of the boat is the use of a rotating platform with space for pilot and eventually passenger(s). Also the point of introduction of kite forces must continually stand between the boat and kite. The consequence requires the development of a boat designed to take full advantage of the three-dimensional properties of the physics of kites. Thus, the Powerkiteboat was the first to submit a prototype vessel in real size combining the use of a ring-shaped base structure to support the handling system of the kite and the pilot and the hidrodynamic base of a sailing boat of 16 feet. The work was intense uniting research and development – in short time it became clear, that there are major limitations that accompany the use of a hydrodynamics originally developed for conventional sailboats.
In 2006 began the study of a concept of al boat with hydrodynamics specially designed for the operation with propulsion by kites. Since 2007 the Powerkiteboat operates from João Pessoa and Recife in Brazil. It counts with a team of four Engineers (Mechanical and Naval) and several technicians with experience in building boats in composite materials. In 2009 was presented the first prototype model of the new concept, called then TUCAMARINO. From 2010 on, the project TUCAMARINO receives research and development support from the Center for Technology and Earth Sciences, Federal University of Pernambuco. After an extended phase of testing, new research and new developments, TUCAMARINO 2011 presents formidable performance and stability and allows aggressive maneuvers. As with all marine engineering the weight of a boat is a friend of the structural stability, but is the enemy of speed. It was decided to build the TUCAMARINO 2011 for more stability, and some mechanical parts had to be modified, but the result was a boat sturdy enough to withstand the forces from the kite.
The new TUCAMARINO model includes other significant improvements such as reduced weight, an additional seat for a passenger, new designed elements for the control of the kite.
The idea of producing a boat powered by kite was born with the appearance of water kites, in the 1970s and 1980s. Initially there were constructions of adapted conventional sail boats, where a person was driving the boat and another person flying the kite, supporting the thrust of the kite passing his own body. From 2000 on the Powerkiteboat developed several models and prototypes of boats powered by kites with the kite coupled directly to the boat. Introducing new technologies for the effective control of the forces from the kite and directional control of the boat as well as improved hydrodynamics, the newest model of the Powerkiteboat called "Tucamarino" has completed its first tests in May 2011. A major feature of the Tucamarino is the bidirectionality. In consequence, the typical maneuvers of traditional sailing on conventional sailing boats turns obsolete at the Tucamarino. By far some of the maneuvers Tucamarino may appear radical, however the pilot maintain continuous entire control over both the kite and the boat.
In test the Tucamarino model 2011 reached speeds above 10 knots, with wind
4 to 5 Beaufort and a kite of 14 sqm. The angle of tacking up against the wind is over 40 degrees. Triangular courses can be easily traversed.
The new Tucamarino model introduces improvements compared with the 2011 model:
• Reduced weight;
• New control of the kite lines with improved design;
• Seat (optional) for a second person
